Heversham Park has reported the death of resident stallion Byword, who was acquired in semi-retirement to allow him to spend some good years in our tranquil surroundings and cover a few mares.
Kat Riley of Heversham commented: “He was as healthy and happy as can be. We sent him to our Jet Master mare, Six Of The Best. He covered her, got the job done perfectly, but collapsed a while afterwards and died of a heart attack. He was a gentlemanly horse, had a beautiful nature.”
Byword, by Paintre Celebre out of the UK’s Broodmare Of The Year, Binche, never realised his promise at stud, though he did produce the G1 winner Camphoratus and a number of others including Garrulous, Riverstown and Lulu’s Boy.
As a racehorse Byword, an athletic and striking chestnut, won the G1 Prince Of Wales Stakes in which he defeated Twice Over. He also placed third in the G1 Juddmonte International and second by just half a length to Goldikova in the G2 Prix Foy and G1 Prix d’Ispahan.
